Society for Community Work Est 1873 Board Retreat: May 10,1:30 PM All Are Welcome! Please join the Board as we discuss how we envision the future for SCW. The Board will meet from 12:30 to 1:30, then reconvene in the Fireside Room to think together about our future. Bring your ideas and your thinking cap and join us Tuesday, May 10. If you can't make it, but have suggestions or thoughts, please let us know. Margaret Pearce, President Nominating Committee Our thanks go to Don Williams and Dick Castile who have ably served as our Nominating Committee, with Don acting as chair. They recommend: President, Joan Rost; Secretary, Cathy Lyon; Treasurer, David Jones; Finance Chair, David Jones; Membership Chair, Nan Parks McCarthy; Program Co-chairs, Alison Rittger and Miko Mosher; Luncheon Co-chairs, Christine Patch-Lindsey and Fran Chan; Sponsorship Chair, Margaret Pearce; Scholarship Co-chairs, Carrie Steere-Salazar and Leslie Bader; and Members-at-Large, Valerie Heine and Mary Castiglia. Results of Membership Survey The results are in with a total of 36 responses. These 36 responses represent over 50% of the regular membership. The SCW Board, at its April 12 meeting, discussed two of the survey areas: the SCW newsletter and birthday parties. We are happy to announce that a majority of responders want a monthly newsletter in both paper and digital form. Based on this conclusion, the Board decided that a paper copy would, as always, be placed on the luncheon tables and would, as always, be mailed to those without a computer who did not attend the luncheon. In addition, we will begin producing a digital newsletter which will be the same content as the paper copy at your luncheon table. It will be sent to everyone who is presently on our email list. The results on whether to continue having birthday parties was not conclusive. 16 responders were in favor; 20 responders said "No" or had no response (meaning they did not care). Because of this, the Board decided that we were going to explore some creative ways to celebrate birthdays. If you would like a copy of the complete results, please let me know. Valerie Heine, Member-at-Large Luncheon Reservations Online Beginning in May we will be offering a third way to sign-up for our monthly luncheons. Until now, you could sign-up at the SCW table after the church service prior to the luncheon or call Christine Patch-Lindsay. Next month you can also choose to go to the home page of the SCW website (www.societyforcommunitvwork.org). In the LUNCHEONS box, click on Sign up for the May 17, 2011 luncheon, fill in the requested information and click on DONE. You can also wait until you receive your Luncheon email reminder. In the MAKE RESERVATIONS section there will be a link to the online Luncheon Sign-up page. Valerie Heine, Member-at-Large Sponsorship News The Sponsorship Committee received grant applications from seventeen organizations in the Bay Area who "provide services consistent with the objectives and purposes of the Society for Community Work." We reviewed them with care and, after difficult decision-making, have selected fifteen to receive grants for next year. We are excited about the three new organizations we will recommend, and we are proud to continue funding for others. We'll look forward to discussing them at the annual meeting. Margaret Pearce, Chair, Sponsorship From the Scholarship Committee The SCW Scholarship committee closed the 2011-12 applications on April 8th and will be soon review, rank and award SCW scholarships for the coming school year. SCW scholarship winners have an option to reapply for a scholarship if they retain good academic standing and we have many returning students this year. You had a chance to meet some of our outstanding 2010 SCW scholarship recipients this past December at the Holiday Lunch. Many of the scholarship winners who could not attend the lunch asked us to pass along their thanks for the support they receive from SCW. Carrie Steere-Salazar, Scholarship Co-chair Good and Welfare Nan Parks McCarthy and her partner Ted Lonergan were married in the church chapel on March 12th. The wedding was attended by friends, family and many of their grandchildren who showered the bride, groom and guests with petals of yellow and red roses. Ted and Nan honeymooned at PoiPoo Beach on Kauai. Karen Grech has a new knee. She is walking with a walker and having physical therapy. Every day is a little better. She hopes to come to the April Birthday Party. April Birthdays: Happy Birthday to Leslie Bader, Jeremiah Kalendae, Catherine Savidge, Anna Rind, Chris Rouse, Fran Chan, and Howard Oringer.
